Last Week's Speakers

Warwick Bell, chairman of our District Rotary Youth Leadership Award Programme and a recent particpant, Toby Hunter, gave HCR an powerpoint presentation on what RYLA is about and just how participants can learn so much by taking part in RYLA.

Every year Rotary Clubs throughout the world organise RYLA programmes for many selected young people from many walks of life.

The RYLA programme consists of a five day experience for young people, between the ages of 18 and 24 inclusive, who have demonstrated potential as leaders in their communities or the workplace. The objective is to develop the candidates’ leadership and personal skills.

Rotary clubs have the opportunity to canvas their communities for young people with leadership potential. Participants may be in employment, from trades to professions, undertaking study, competitive sport, recipt of community awards or similar. This is what HCR's Youth Committee will be doing.

The RYLA award scheme aims to recognise, encourage and educate youth leaders by offering them an intensive youth leadership training experience. Rotary gains from RYLA by demonstrating respect and concern for youth, encouraging, assisting and training selected youth leaders and potential leaders in responsible and effective youth leadership, and recognising publicly the high qualities of the many young people who are rendering service to their communities as youth leaders.

RYLA 2010 will be run from 27-31 January 2010,
and will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Eastern Hutt.

100th RI Convention in Birmingham, England,
21-24 June 2009

After four days of Rotarians from all over the world celebrated Rotary's spirit of international fellowship and service at the 100th RI Convention in Birmingham, England.

RI President-elect John Kenny, the first Scotsman to head the RI in its 104-year history, encouraged the more than 16,000 Rotarians from over 150 countries at the convention to join in the last push to eradicate polio.

"Until the day the earth is declared polio-free, this work must be our first priority and our main focus," said Kenny.
